What Should You Avoid Before Rhinoplasty?

  • Avoid Anxiety and Do Not Harbor Doubts

Speak to your surgeon on any doubts you may have so that they can be put to rest, and you feel confident and reassured about the surgery you will undergo. Being fully aware of the rhinoplasty procedure is the key to minimizing surprises.

  • Do Not Use Makeup or Wear Jewelry on The Day of Surgery

Do not apply any cosmetic products to the face or hair on the day of surgery, but wash your face thoroughly to reduce bacteria and debris. Avoid tanning prior to the surgery as it can cause inflammation of the skin. Do not eat or drink for at least eight hours before rhinoplasty and get a good night’s sleep.

  • Do Not Take Certain Medications and Supplements

Two weeks prior to rhinoplasty, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen) and vitamin E should be avoided to prevent the risk of excessive bleeding during the operation. Herbal supplements and fish oils are blood-thinning and should also be avoided prior to the operation. It is highly recommended that you only take medication prescribed by your doctor.

  • Do Not Smoke

Don’t smoke and don’t get exposed to second-hand smoke. Nicotine has the potential to lead to serious complications during rhinoplasty. Smoking causes nicotine to restrict the amount of oxygen that reaches to different parts of the body. Furthermore, the carbon dioxide will also negatively affect your blood vessels hampering proper healing or potentially causing complications during the surgery. Avoid smoking 2 to 3 weeks prior to the surgery but the general guideline is “the longer the better” to ensure the best results.

  • Stop Drinking Alcohol Two Weeks Prior to the Surgery

Alcohol thins the blood and therefore can lead to serious complications with excessive bleeding or cause anesthetic risks.

  • Avoid Certain Foods

Foods that cause increased blood pressure, weaken the immune system (foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates) and/or those that cause blood-thinning (ginger, eggplant, tomatoes…) should be avoided at all costs.
